Connect an AI assistant
Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another MCP client to Varis so that it can find and pay for services.
Varis runs an MCP server that AI assistants connect to. When you connect an assistant, you sign in to Varis in your browser and set how much the assistant can spend. The assistant then finds services, calls them, and pays from your balance.
Before you begin
- Create a Varis account.
- Use an assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, or Visual Studio Code.
Use the official connector if there is one
If your assistant lists Varis in its own connector directory, connect from there. An official connector needs no URL, and it stays up to date.
Otherwise, add Varis as a custom connector with this URL:
https://api.usevaris.com/v1/mcpAdd Varis to your assistant
Custom connectors are available on Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
- In Claude, open Settings and go to Connectors.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Enter
Varisas the name andhttps://api.usevaris.com/v1/mcpas the URL. - Click Add, and then click Connect.
On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner adds the connector for the organisation. Each member then clicks Connect to sign in with their own Varis account.
Approve the connection
When your assistant connects for the first time, Varis opens in your browser.
- Sign in to Varis.
- Set the spend limits for this assistant:
- Per request: the most it can pay for one call.
- Per day: the most it can spend in one day.
- Optional: Limit the assistant to certain categories of service.
- Click Allow.
You can change these limits later. For more information, see Spend limits.
Use Varis in a chat
Ask your assistant to do something that a service on Varis can do. For example:
Use Varis to convert 100 US dollars to euros. If your balance is too low, the assistant shows you a funding link. Open it to top up, and then ask the assistant to try again. For more information, see Top up your balance.
Manage a connected assistant
Each assistant you connect becomes its own agent, named after the assistant. If you connect both Claude and ChatGPT, you get two agents, each with its own limits and history.
To see, change, or revoke a connected assistant, go to Agents in the dashboard. When you revoke an assistant, it stops working immediately. To use it again, connect it again.
Troubleshoot
- The assistant can't connect: check that the URL is exactly
https://api.usevaris.com/v1/mcp. Varis doesn't support the older SSE transport. - The assistant reports "too many requests": each assistant can make 300 requests a minute to the MCP server. Wait a moment, and then try again.
