Install the CLI

Install the Varis CLI on macOS, Linux, or Windows, and keep it up to date.

The Varis CLI is a single program. You don't need Node.js to install it.

Install

Choose your system:

brew install usevaris/tap/varis

To check that it worked, run:

varis --version

Install without Homebrew or Scoop

If you don't use Homebrew or Scoop, use the install script.

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/usevaris/varis-cli/main/install.sh | sh

The script does the following:

  1. Downloads the latest release and checks it against the release's SHA256SUMS.
  2. Installs varis in ~/.varis/bin, or %USERPROFILE%\.varis\bin on Windows.
  3. Adds that folder to your PATH.

Open a new terminal before you run varis.

You can change what the script does with these environment variables:

VariableWhat it does
VARIS_VERSIONInstalls a specific version, such as VARIS_VERSION=0.2.0.
VARIS_NO_MODIFY_PATHIf set to 1, doesn't change your PATH.
VARIS_INSTALL_DIRInstalls somewhere else. varis upgrade and varis dracarys only work with the default folder.

Supported systems

  • macOS on Apple silicon and Intel.
  • Linux on x64 and ARM, with glibc. Alpine and other musl-based systems aren't supported.
  • Windows on x64.

The CLI isn't code-signed yet. If you download it from a browser, macOS and Windows might warn you. Homebrew, Scoop, and the install script are less affected.

Upgrade

To upgrade to the latest version, run:

varis upgrade

The CLI upgrades itself the same way you installed it: with brew upgrade, scoop update, or by replacing itself after a checksum check. If you're already on the latest version, it does nothing.

varis upgrade only installs full releases. Pre-releases, such as 0.2.0-rc.1, are never installed unless you ask for one with VARIS_VERSION.

If you installed the CLI in a custom folder or downloaded it by hand, install it again instead.
